Big Lake Schools

Big Lake Independent School District #727
is located approximately 35 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The District has a total population of 14,228 lifelong learners. District #727 has two elementary schools (Independence and Libery), one middle school and one high school all on a centrally located campus. Our schools are the center of the community, used regularly by many local residents.
Big Lake’s schools were designed to serve the educational needs of the community. At the heart of the high school is a state-of-the-art theater; an interactive comprehensive resource center; and a multi-purpose athletic facility. All three of these areas embrace the idea that learning should nurture the artistic, physical and academic intelligence of everyone in our community. The elementary and middle schools have similar features to meet the needs of learners of all ages. In order to fulfill our district mission of “Quality Learning for Successful Living,” a strong technology support system has been implemented. Through the use of computer and phone networks, we have enhanced the communication link between staff and the community. The school has the capacity to directly access data and personnel at any of their four buildings. This technology infrastructure has provided learners with the opportunities to interact with people from different cultures, conduct research using university resources, and follow current events as they happen.

Community members, students, and staff have had and continue to have input on school design and school programs. Numerous Community Education Advisory Councils, School Site Councils, Parent Involvement Committees and Task Forces provide recommendations on school programs, budget, evaluation, staffing and policy. Hundreds of parents, students, and other community members are actively involved in the decision making process. In addition, a Volunteer Organization to Improve our Community Environment (V.O.I.C.E.) enables Big Lake Schools to effectively communicate with all community members.
